About 1000 Random Names

1000 Random Names is a free tool for writers, designers, developers, teachers and gamers who need realistic names quickly. Every name is generated in your browser using a secure random number generator.

Where the names come from

  • US first names: US Social Security Administration, “Beyond the Top 1000 Names” national data, 1900–2025 (US government work, public domain).
  • US surnames: US Census Bureau, 2010 Census surnames file (public domain).
  • Other countries: locale name lists from the open-source Faker project (MIT licence). Russian and Ukrainian names are transliterated to Latin letters by us.
  • Japanese, Korean and Arabic supplements: lists of common names compiled by our editors, released under CC0.
  • Usernames, team names and fantasy names: our own word and syllable lists (CC0).

We do not copy name lists from other generator sites.

How popularity works

For American names the lists are ranked by how many people have the name. Common means the top 200, uncommon ranks 200–1500, and rare is everything below that.
